WILLIAMS, Gordon D.
May 22, 1933 - April 26, 2022
It is with great sorrow that I announce the death of my beloved husband, Gordon D. Williams. He died on April 26, 2022, after a courageous battle against an inexorable disease.
Gordon was much loved and is sadly missed by: Renate (wife), Joanne (daughter, with husband Peter), Garth (son), Bryce (son, with wife Tammy), Coraliene (sister), Ivan (brother, with daughters Alison and Norma); grandchildren Danielle, Nick, Gage, Reilly, Robert and Reid; by his extended family in Canada and abroad; and last but not least, by his many friends and colleagues.
He was well-liked wherever he went, life-affirming and easy-going, a teacher, mentor, helper, partner. Large is the number who remember him fondly for the good influence he had on their lives, the activities they shared, the fun they had together.
He travelled widely-on business or with me, Renate-in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Japan. He crossed Germany, my country of origin, from the Baltic in the north to Bavaria in the south, from the North Sea in the west to Potsdam in the east.
At the same time, he enjoyed a colourful and meritorious professional life: After obtaining his PhD (1960), he taught Geology, primarily at the University of Alberta, interspersed with two years at the University of Queensland (Australia); and, after retirement, at the University of Calgary. In addition to his primary employment, Gordon was President and founder of Summus Resource Evaluations Limited, a consulting firm. At one time or another, he also held the positions of Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology at Mount Royal College; of District Geologist at Suncor Inc.; and of Vice President at the Canadian Petroleum Training Institute Ltd.
During his long career, he was a member and served as president of three professional associations; (1) Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA); (2) Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (CCPG); and (3) Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG).
Finally, throughout his life, Gordon's intellectual accomplishments and loyal contributions were recognized through numerous awards, honours, and medals, the last of which is the 2021 Brandon University "Distinguished Alumni Award for Career Achievement."
Date and place for a Celebration of Life will be announced.
Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca.

Plant a tree: How does it work
When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.
An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.
After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.
Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.
Tree Planting Timeline
Orders placed in:
January - May
Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.
June - December
Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
