Cougars clinch Final Four spot in victory over TRU

MRU heads to Final Four

Mount Royal booked a ticket to the Final Four after a 2-0 victory over Thompson River University this afternoon at Stadium Field.

"We did what we said we were going to do. Everyone put in their shift. We all worked hard for each other, sacrificed for the team, but the job isn't finished. Now onto the next," said Dawid Dudek of the Cougars.

Mount Royal attacked the field early, hungry for the win, and scored their first goal in the 20th minute after Dudek was able to hurdle over the body of TRU goalie Jackson Gardner. Dudek received a beautiful pass across to the left side from Miguel Da Rocha and forced the ball through a tough and defensive Wolf Pack line to put the men up.

TRU held MRU to a one goal lead for the next 67 minutes before David Schaefer broke past the Wolf Pack and received a through ball sent by Niklas Liebich. The pass gave Schaefer nothing but space to demonstrate his skills in a one-on-one against Gardner. A perfectly timed shot placed the ball into the back left corner of the net.

"I thought it was entertaining and both teams tried to impose themselves on the other," said MRU head coach Ryan Gyaki. "All the teams in this league are talented and hardworking and it really comes down to the flip of a coin each game, same as ours today."

The Thompson River team held their own all season, hosting a 4-3-5 record. Both squads matched up perfectly in terms of play style, forcing an impressive display of footwork and pristine passing by everyone on the field.

"I think we carried some good possessions. We were getting ourselves into the areas but unfortunately we just weren't getting good quality scoring opportunities and at the end that's kind of what let us down a little bit," said TRU head coach John Antulov. "We're a very young team. We only lose one player this year. We got some really good quality players coming in so it definitely gives us something to build towards for next year."

Akwasi Agyekum made his mark for the Wolf Pack on the field this afternoon, leading the team in repeated attacking opportunities. Agyekum played an aggressive game, standing his ground against a tough Cougars defense.

His efforts proved necessary in their battle against MRU and he was a key factor in holding Mount Royal to one for the majority of the game.
"We had a really good defensive record but at times we couldn't find a way to finish chances,' said Agyekum on his team's performance this season. "I think it was pretty much an even game and I think the home advantage served them pretty well but they're a good team and they're probably going to go far for the rest of the season."

With the win MRU has also secured the hosting rights for championship weekend starting November 6. Finals will be hosted November 7. Make sure to catch all the action live at Stadium Field or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
