Be there for their best day: Help our grads celebrate convocation
It’s time to celebrate our class of 2023. Convocation is coming up from May 31 to June 2. Be there for our graduands as they prepare to become official MRU grads and sign up for a supporting role at this year’s ceremonies. A variety of time commitments and activity types are available to choose from. Whether you have an hour to spare, or a whole morning, or whether you prefer being behind the scenes or among the crowds, you can help our students have their best day ever on campus. Find out more and sign up or contact Courtney Montgomery for detailed information.
Indigenous Honouring Ceremonies
First Nation, Métis and Inuit graduates will participate in Mount Royal University's Indigenous Honouring Ceremonies on May 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bella Concert Hall to celebrate their accomplishments as a community. As you arrive, entertainment and light refreshments will be served in the Bella lobby. This event is free. Everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is required.
Save the date
An MRU community Summer Block Party will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at the Amphitheatre. Keep an eye out for an RSVP in your inbox next week.

Cobra chicken alert!
It’s that time of year: the nesting Canadian geese on campus are feeling very protective. That means hissing, much flapping of wings and even nipping. Please give the wildlife a wide berth and respect their space.
Library spring technology renewal taking place through May
The Library has begun its spring 2023 technology renewal, which will upgrade audio-visual technology in five Riddell Library and Learning Centre spaces for improved teaching and learning experiences. As renovations are completed, the Formal Boardroom, Ideas Lounge and Visualization Classroom will be unavailable for bookings until June 2. Learn more.
Faculty and the media
Please join Mount Royal University's media relations team for a one-hour information session on Faculty and the Media on Wednesday, May 17 from 1 to 2 p.m. Mount Royal and its faculty take great pride in helping the media add context and perspective to a wide variety of topics ranging from business, politics and criminology to science, computing, psychology and much more. This session will include an overview of Calgary media, the process of interacting with reporters and producers, how to be a more effective expert, MRU's media experts hub and how we can help make those connections. To register, please email mediarelations@mtroyal.ca.
Big Bob’s BBQ May 23
The Transitional Vocational Program (TVP) is thrilled to invite you to attend Big Bob’s BBQ on May 23. This fun, inclusive event is in support of TVP’s programming for adults with developmental disabilities. There will be burgers (of course!), live music and valuable door prizes, including a $500 Superstore gift card. Even better, the barbecue is an opportunity to gather and enjoy the company of the Mount Royal community. Tickets are $20 and are available online, at the Cougars Campus Store and on Main Street (in front of the old library location) the week of May 16. They will also be available at the door.
Information Technology Services is here for you
Whether you’re looking to use Google Workspace tools more effectively, have a tech issue or need to learn more about research computing, Information Technology Services has the resources and people to support your goal. Learn more.
More washroom choices on campus
Some multi-user washrooms in the main building have been redesignated as all-gender, which means everyone can use them. Learn more about this step to provide a more equitable and inclusive environment for all members of the Mount Royal community.
Parking lot sweeping May 15 to 19
Parking lot sweeping and line painting will start in the east lots on May 15 at 8 p.m. To minimize disruptions, most work will be done in the evenings from May 15 to 19. Due to evening noise bylaws, Lots 1 and 2 will be closed on May 23, and parkers in those lots are asked to relocate to Lots 4 and 5 for that day. Arrangements will be made to have MRU Daycare drop off on the inlets.
Spring and summer student recreation memberships
Encourage students to stay active this summer with a student spring and summer recreation membership. Students can bring their student ID to the Recreation customer service desk to purchase a four-month, May to August membership for only $99. Pro-rated options are available at the start of each month for those who won’t be in the city for the entire summer. Visit the customer service desk or email recreation@mtroyal.ca for more information.
