New trailblazer announced for Indigenous business education

The MRU community proudly welcomes Dr. Evelyn Poitras, PhD, as the Ptarmigan Charitable Foundation Chair in Indigenous Business and Economic Development. The program, funded by a $1.4 million gift, is a collaboration with Siksika Nation's Old Sun Community College and designed to enhance Indigenous students' business education. Poitras aims to foster leadership within these communities.

Library boosts inclusivity with special LGBTQ+ project

The Riddell Library and Learning Centre has been working on the Homosaurus Project, enhancing search inclusivity for LGBTQ+ resources. Spearheaded by collection services technician Adam Cohen, the project also provided a valuable work opportunity for student Jules De Guzman, who contributed to updating and expanding the library’s metadata, making it more reflective of diverse identities.

Campus road closure through July 31

 

The main road (Mount Royal Circle) between the East Gate lawn and the EC building is closed until July 31 for construction work to replace a water valve. The road is also closed east of the soccer field. Learn more.

 

 

Gold STARS rating for MRU

 

Mount Royal is proud to announce that we have earned a Gold Rating in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. Our score of 66.23 represents the percentage of points earned in the assessment. The Gold rating is valid until June 2027.

 

 

New, easier way to report phishing emails

 

An easier, more effective way to report phishing emails that also enhances cybersecurity is now available. Use GMail’s built-in reporting feature for phishing emails, rather than the Phish AlarmButton or forwarding to cybersecurity@mtroyal.ca. This will also reduce the number of phishing emails that hit your inbox. Learn how.

 

 

Water usage update

 

As the City of Calgary has eased water restrictions, we will be reopening our pool on Monday, July 8. We will continue to monitor restrictions and recommendations and ask all employees to continue to be measured with their indoor water usage as the system returns to normal operations. The outdoor water restrictions remain at this time. Thank you to the Mount Royal community for taking action over the course of this challenging time for Calgary. Learn more. 

 

 

Parking update: July 22-28

 

Please be aware Lots A, B, 1, 8 and East Gate Parkade will be unavailable from July 22 to 28. All those impacted including permit holders, daily parkers and visitors to campus are asked to park in Lots 4, 5 or 6A. Visit the parking homepage for more information about permits and payment under “Announcements”.

 

Annual space audit underway 

Over the summer, Facilities Management staff is entering all rooms on campus to update space information. Pictures may be taken to record the condition of finishes, furniture layouts and equipment. Please secure sensitive information. Email fm@mtroyal.ca with any questions. Learn more and view a tentative schedule.

Alumnus wins Governor General Gold Medal at UBC Okanagan

 

Jordan Bird, who graduated with a degree in Health Science in 2019, was awarded the prestigious Governor General Gold Medal recently during his master's studies at UBC Okanagan. This recognition was awarded for his outstanding academic accomplishments. Reflecting on his journey, Bird acknowledged the influence of his mentor, Dr. Trevor Day, PhD, from his time at MRU. He also emphasized the importance of learning from exemplary figures like Mike Tymko and Ryan Hoiland, previous winners of the same accolade. Bird expressed gratitude for the supportive environment and exceptional peers at UBC and UBCO, which further fostered his academic growth. His success underscores the enduring impact of mentorship and collaboration in academia.

 

Current student honoured with Isgaakuwa Award for Indigenous leadership

 

Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee (CAUAC) and The City of Calgary proudly announce Magel Labelle as the recipient of this year's Isgaakuwa (Young Persons) Award. Labelle, a dedicated student studying business administration and social innovation at MRU, has demonstrated exceptional leadership within his community. Passionate about music, he aims to establish a music studio to empower vulnerable youth through artistic expression. His involvement at The Alex Youth Health Centre and participation in the IndigeNight program showcase his commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and celebrating Indigenous identity. Labelle hopes his recognition inspires other Indigenous youth to pursue their passions and contribute positively to their communities.
