You’re invited to breakfast with the President

Employees are invited to sign up to join Dr. Tim Rahilly, PhD, for breakfast. This is a chance to chat, enjoy a meal and share ideas with your colleagues on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. (drop in as your schedule permits or stay for the entire time). If you are interested, please fill out this form. This event is limited to 15 participants and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference will be given to those who have not had a conversation with the president with an effort to have representation from all areas of the university. Only those selected will receive a confirmation to attend, but we hope to schedule additional opportunities in the future.

 

Buffalo Treaty signing

 

Our campus will make a significant step in advancing its commitment to indigenization and decolonization by signing the Buffalo Treaty on Sept. 25, 2024. This treaty was first established in 2014 by numerous First Nations to restore the buffalo population, a vital cultural and spiritual symbol. The signing ceremony, hosted by the Kainai First Nation and the International Buffalo Relations Institute, will take place in Stand Off, AB, marking the treaty’s 10th anniversary. Learn more.

 

 

Sound the alarm: Fire drill Sept. 24

 

Mount Royal is holding a fire drill on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. The exercise will take up to 30 minutes. It includes a mandatory evacuation of all Lincoln Park campus buildings except Residence. Everyone must participate in this important safety exercise. Your co-operation is appreciated. Use the MRU Now app (iOS and Android) for fast notifications. Learn more.

Every drop counts: Water conservation on campus

 

With the ongoing outdoor water restrictions, we are strictly limiting our use. In addition, everyone is being asked to reduce indoor water use to help maintain supply for critical functions. Access the New York Times

 

Mount Royal’s Library is pleased to provide all employees access to the New York Times. To do so, go to the Library's Databases page ["find and borrow" nav menu > databases] and find the NYT page. Then select Mount Royal University as your school. If you are on campus and connected to an MRU network, create an account using your MRU email. From there you can download the app/access anywhere and sign in with those same credentials.

Attend this year’s Sustainability Forum

 

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, this year’s Sustainability Forum will serve as a platform for knowledge dissemination, discussion and student engagement about sustainability. Understand how researchers, practitioners and students are working to solve the most relevant issues of the 21st century. Deadline approaching to vote in the NSERC Science Exposed Competition

 

Honours biology student Emily Kingdon, associate professor Adrienne Benediktsson, PhD, and cellular molecular biology laboratory instructor Ava Zare, PhD, are among the 20 finalists in NSERC's 2024 Science Exposed competition. The image is called "Cellular Cosmos" and was produced by Kingdon in BIOL 4101 — Advanced Cellular and Molecular Biology in the fall of 2023. Kingdon wanted her instructors to share authorship on the image because of their guidance on the staining and imaging techniques she used. The public can vote for their favourite image until Sept. 22, 2024. Please support your MRU community and vote.

 

Champions of literacy

Bachelor of Education — Elementary students Fatima Sammoud and Jessica Cuillerier have each won a 2024 Siobhan Isabella Reid Memorial Scholarship for their volunteer efforts teaching students to read. Both work for various organizations that support students with learning disabilities. Read more.

Honoured with the Deb Tomlinson Award for Excellence in Collaboration

Dr. Gaye Warthe, PhD, has been recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Deb Tomlinson Award for Excellence in Collaboration by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS) board of directors. This award highlights Warthe’s outstanding ability to unite diverse perspectives and strengths toward achieving a common goal: creating safer communities free from sexual violence. The award will be presented at the AASAS annual general meeting on Sept. 20, 2024.

Dr. Marva Ferguson receives the President’s Award

In celebration of Jamaica’s 62nd year of independence, the Jamaican Canadian Alberta Association hosted a civic ceremony on Aug. 3, 2024, where Dr. Marva Ferguson, PhD, was honoured with the President’s Award. Ferguson was recognized for her significant contributions to higher education, particularly in Black history, and for her efforts in combating anti-black racism and mentoring youth in the community. This award underscores her dedication to fostering community engagement and creating positive change.

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates.
