Bleed Blue

New thoughts on old rocks

Associate Professor Paul A. Johnston, PhD, and Adjunct Professor Christopher J. Collom, PhD, of MRU’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, are co-authors of the article “U-Pb geochronology reveals that hydrothermal dolomitization was coeval to the deposition of the BurgessShale lagerstätte,” recently published in Nature Communications — Earth & Environment. The multi-disciplinary study integrated paleontological and geochronological data that were found to support Johnston’s and Collom’s earlier published hypothesis that magnesium-rich brines breached the seafloor 505 million years ago in what is now Yoho National Park. Nutrients in the brines supported early marine animals that are spectacularly preserved in the famous Burgess Shale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Read more about Johnston’s research
