Transgender Day of Remembrance 

 

An event commemorating the Transgender Day of Remembrance took place on Nov. 20 in Wyckham House. The event provided the campus community with an opportunity to learn about the resounding impact of violence on transgender and LGBTQ2S+ individuals, while simultaneously honouring those who lost their lives. The memorial ceremony provided significant insight about the 356 gender-diverse people who were lost to violence between Oct. 1, 2023 to Sept. 26, 2024.

 

 

MRSA Annual General Meeting Nov. 27

 

The Mount Royal Staff Association Executive Board is holding its Annual General Meeting in person and via livestream on Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 10:45 a.m. to noon. Article 7.3 of the MRSA/BoG Collective Agreement allows for time off with pay — "up to a total of two and a half (2.5) hours to be used over two meetings to Association members for the purpose of attending the Annual General Meeting and the General Meeting provided these occur during the Employee's normal working hours." MRSA members are encouraged to attend, where operationally feasible.

 

 

Holiday Mix and Mingle

 

Remember to join us for some festive fun at the annual Holiday Mix and Mingle on Thursday, Nov. 28 at Ross Glen Hall. From 2 to 4 p.m., all employees are invited to connect with colleagues, enjoy light refreshments and celebrate the holiday season. We look forward to seeing you there!

 

 

G-wing update: DSR work starting soon


As work progresses on turning the G-wing into a vibrant hub of student-based services and activity, the project is entering a new phase. The deep services replacement (DSR) project in G-100 begins next week with work taking place overnight to minimize impact on the campus community. Learn more.

 

 

Construction on Main Street

 

As construction of the wall on the first level of Main Street begins next week, please keep right when you’re navigating the space. While much of this work will take place overnight, some will occur during regular University hours. Please respect all signage for your safety and that of others. Learn more.

Starting Friday, Nov. 22, you can update your employee information, including address, phone number, email and emergency contacts, in one convenient and updated location called Personal Profile. Visit the Employee information section on the Employee resources page of the HR Information Hub for more information. You can also access directly through your Banner Employee Dashboard>Menu>Personal Information>Personal Profile.

Spaces are still available to register for the Employee Wellness session on Wednesday, Nov. 27, What Is Art Therapy, presented by MRU’s Dr. Pattie Pryma from 10 to 11 a.m. in T107. Learn more and register now.

 

Giving Day is Dec. 3 

On Tuesday, Dec. 3, MRU will host its annual Giving Day, a 24-hour celebration of philanthropy highlighting donor impact. Support MRU students by purchasing a 50/50 ticket for a chance to win up to $10,000. Learn more and buy tickets now.

 

Holiday music favourites at the Taylor Centre

The Mount Royal Conservatory will host its two classic concerts this holiday season at the Bella Concert Hall. Winter Fantasia takes place Dec. 8 and tickets are on sale now! Sounds of the Season is on Dec. 14 and tickets will be available on Nov. 28. Finally, Calgary’s iconic a cappella group, the Heebee-jeebees, will play two shows on Dec. 20 and 21 offering the merriest of Christmas fun. Get tickets!

 

MRU Camps: Spring/Winter registration is now open!

MRU Camps is now accepting registrations for 2025 Professional Development (PD) and Spring Break programs. Camps run from January through May to keep your child active and engaged during days when school is on break. Health Services offers team-based care to employees

 

The Health Services medical clinic offers team-based care including family physicians, mental health only physicians, mental health nurses, registered nurses, a licensed practical nurse, a psychiatrist and more. Mark’s savings program is back

 

All MRU employees and their families are able to receive a Mark’s savings card that offers 10% off all regular priced items when presented in-store. Mail Services will be distributing physical cards throughout department offices across campus. These savings cards can also be picked up at Receiving. When shopping at a Mark’s location, simply show the card to receive the discount on the purchase.

Professor selected for local and global initiatives

 

Dr. Ranjan Datta, PhD, from the Department of Humanities, was selected for both the City of Calgary’s Anti Racism Action committee and the UN Environment Programme's seventh Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) initiative. The Anti Racism Action committee was formed to offer support and further combat systemic racism in local policy making, while the UN initiative allows attendees to deeply engage with GEO-7’s structure and contribute meaningful insights on the environmental impacts of the global pandemic, recent disasters and conflicts. 

 

Dr. Jodie Nickel, PhD, hosted professional development event at Calgary high school

 

North Trail High School was the destination for Nickel’s professional development event for Calgary Board of Education teachers. The event was also supported by the MRU’s Department of Education and showcased how MRU contributes expertise and research to guide current teachers. Further, the event offered the latest findings on best practices within teaching and learning with the community.

Call for donations: SAMRU Food and Hygiene Drive

The annual Food and Hygiene Drive is back again this year and accepting donations until Dec. 9 at the Peer Support Centre (Z210). Donations received during this time help ensure that SAMRU has enough resources to meet the growing need within the campus community. Items in particularly high demand include: deodorant, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, sanitary napkins, canned meat, peanut butter, eggs, cereal and canned fruit. Contributions can be dropped off anytime at the Peer Support Centre or at the remaining Main Street SAMRU tabling events on Nov. 21, 26, 28, and Dec. 3 and 5. Learn more.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
