Kicking off Giving Day with a 50/50 cash raffle

We are just a month away from Mount Royal’s first Giving Day. To kick off the campaign, you can support MRU students and potentially win some cash through the Giving Day 50/50 Cash Raffle, which runs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30. Giving Day takes place Nov. 30 and is a 24-hour celebration of philanthropy on campus highlighting the impact of MRU's generous donor community.   

Cougars men's soccer advance in Canada West finals

On Saturday, the Mount Royal Cougars men's soccer team booked a ticket to the final four of the Canada West playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Thompson Rovers University. By winning, the Cougars secured hosting rights for the championship weekend starting Nov. 6. Make sure to catch all the semifinal action live at Stadium Field next to West Residence starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the Cougars go up against the University of British Columbia. Celebrating diversity in education

Join us as we celebrate International Education Week, an annual global celebration emphasizing the important role that international education plays in furthering social, economic and cultural well-being. Hosted events include a Study Abroad Information Session, an International Co-op session, Indigenous learning opportunities, information on pathways to permanent residency and a number of fun, social activities. International Education Week Photo Contest     

Open to MRU students, staff and faculty, share your love of travel by submitting your international photos to the annual International Education Week Photo Contest. Photos must be submitted by Oct. 31 and voting is open during International Education Week from Nov. 8 to 10. Prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions. Office of Safe Disclosure provides neutral resource for the MRU community

Feden Abeda is MRU’s new safe disclosure advisor, a position reporting to the university secretariat through senior counsel. Feden now leads the Office of Safe Disclosure, which is a neutral, informed and confidential resource for the facilitation of concerns related to human-rights protected grounds, discrimination and harassment. The office also ensures members of the MRU community understand policies and processes.

dr. linda manyguns, phd, mru’s associate vice-president of indigenization and decolonization, provides her perspectives on the word Equality to begin a campus decolonization poster campaign. Learn more about knowledge sharing at mru.

New meal and travel allowances effective Nov. 1

Effective Nov. 1, Mount Royal will revise its reimbursement rates for meals and allowances as required by provincial legislation. Travel and Expense Procedures Appendix A (Meals and Allowances) has been updated to match current Government of Alberta allowances. Details are available here

No, you’re not seeing things

Between Nov. 1 and Nov. 7, some clocks on campus will be wrong by an hour. The old system needs updating, but replacements arrived late because of global supply chain problems. There isn’t time to complete all of the rewiring before Nov. 7, when daylight savings time ends. Use a second device, or let time be a mystery!

Did you know?

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. Learning disability occurs in about 10 per cent of the population and refers to a deficit in a specific area in someone who otherwise has average or above-average intelligence, or even giftedness. In 2020/21, 17 per cent of MRU students registered with Access and Inclusion Services with a learning disability. Learn more.

Humanities prof makes waves in high-impact research

Dr. Ranjan Datta, PhD, of the Faculty of Arts, was ranked as one of the 66 high-impact researchers in the World List of Sustainability Researchers by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme and the European School of Sustainability Science and Research 2021. Datta is also MRU’s Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Community Disaster Research.

Calgary Journal wins Pacemaker award      

Based on the calibre of its final four print editions, the Calgary Journal has once again won a coveted Pacemaker Award for overall excellence. Bestowed by the Associated Collegiate Press, this contest puts MRU in head-to-head competition against much larger American schools. Congratulations to former MRU faculty member and supervising editor Dr. Sean Holman, PhD, faculty member Brad Simm, student editors Chloe Chapdelaine, Mackenzie Hermann, Angela Lackey and Tristan Oram, and everyone who had a hand in filling the final print editions with great content.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
